Typically, system prototyping is in conjunction with new product development and applications engineering stage. This usually includes mechanical assembly, element alignment, system testing, and performance documentation.
The prototyping may involve self-contained optomechanical systems, benchboards, breadboards, or discrete tabletop setups. Often an optical test bench subsystem using interferometry, MTF, patterned targets, or other appropriate input must be designed and qualified prior to prototype testing.
As this stage is crucial to proving a design concept and developing a proper basis for efficient production, it is critical to completely understand the performance and operating parameters of the prototype.
